Here is the problem a published video sets up. Once it is uploaded everything in the frame is permanent: the link burned into the corner, the URL read out loud, the code on screen. What it points at is not. Sponsors end, product pages move, launches close, and the video keeps playing anyway. Meanwhile a growing share of the audience is watching on a television, where there is no clickable description, no comment section within reach, and no practical way to type a URL. Why do YouTube creators put QR codes in their videos?

In February 2025 YouTube’s CEO said that television had passed mobile and desktop as the primary device for YouTube viewing in the US, measured by watch time, at more than a billion hours a day on TVs. That number needs its qualifiers kept attached, because by global view count mobile is still far ahead. But watch time is the number that matters for this, since the person deep into a twenty-minute video on a living-room screen is exactly the person who cannot click anything.
On a TV there is no clickable description, no comment section within reach, and no practical way to type a URL. What there is, almost always, is a phone somewhere near the viewer. A code on screen is the only bridge from one to the other that takes less effort than giving up.
The same thing happens on desktop, for a different reason. Someone with the video on a second monitor while they play a game is not going to alt-tab, find the description, and copy a link. They will point their phone at the screen, because that is genuinely easier.
What makes a QR code in a video different from one on a poster?
You can reprint a poster. You cannot re-render a video.
This is the part most creators have not thought through, and it is worth being precise about it, because the precision is the whole point.
Once a video is published, YouTube Studio lets you do exactly two things to the footage: trim it and blur parts of it. There is no operation that swaps the video file for a corrected one. So a QR code you rendered into the frames is in those frames permanently, at whatever URL it encoded on the day you exported.
It gets more locked as the video does better. YouTube’s own help page says that for unedited video with over 100,000 views, you may not be able to save changes at all except to blur faces, unless you are in the Partner Program. The more successful the video, the fewer edits it will accept.
And the escape hatch is worse than it sounds. You can always delete and re-upload, but a trim keeps the URL, the view count, and the comments, while a re-upload keeps none of them. You would be trading every view and every comment that video has ever earned for the ability to fix one link.
So a printed menu is actually the easier case. A restaurant with a bad code can reprint. You cannot.
Does YouTube’s own QR code feature solve this?
For shopping, largely yes. For everything else, no.
In October 2025 YouTube added in-video QR codes to its TV app so creators can tag products and viewers can scan through to a product page. It is a good feature and it is aimed squarely at YouTube Shopping, which is where it sits and what gates it.

It does not cover your Discord invite, your newsletter signup, your Patreon, a sponsor’s landing page, your own site, or a link to the thing you spent the whole video talking about. Those are still yours to solve, and they are most of what creators actually want to point people at.

Why does the destination need to change later?
Because everything you would point at moves, and the video does not.
Think about what you would put behind a code in a video published today, and where those things will be in two years:
- A Discord invite. Standard invites expire. Servers get remade.
- A newsletter. Creators move between platforms constantly. The signup URL changes with them.
- A sponsor. The campaign ends, the tracking link dies, and the deal is over long before the video stops being watched.
- A product page. Restocks, redesigns, new URLs, a whole new store.
- A links page. These get rebuilt more often than anything else on this list.
Meanwhile the video keeps playing. Back catalogue is most of a channel’s watch time, and a video from three years ago is still collecting views today with whatever you put in it.
A static QR code has the destination baked into the pattern, which means the URL you exported in 2026 is the URL it will still be sending people to in 2031. A dynamic code encodes a redirect instead, so the pattern in the frames never changes while the destination behind it can be updated any time. That is the only version of this that survives contact with a back catalogue.

Most QR services rent you the redirect. You pay monthly, and if you stop, the code stops. On a poster that is annoying. How do you make one that actually scans on a TV?

- Hold it still, and hold it long enough. Give it several seconds of stable screen time. A code that flashes past in one second is decoration. If it moves with an animation, it is unscannable while it moves.
- Give it high contrast and real quiet space. Dark code on a light panel, with clear margin around it. Do not lay it over footage, a gradient, or anything busy.
- Respect compression. Video encoding softens fine detail, and QR codes are fine detail. Bigger and simpler survives the encoder. A short destination URL makes a less dense pattern, which compresses better.

- Test it the way a viewer will. Upload the video, play it on an actual television, and scan from the sofa with a normal phone. Do not test the source file on your desk. The uploaded, compressed, TV-rendered version is the one your audience gets.
