How big should a QR code be for print?

As a rule of thumb, make a QR code at least one tenth of the distance it will be scanned from, and never smaller than about 0.8 inches (2 cm). A code read from 10 inches away should be at least an inch; a poster read from 10 feet should be at least 12 inches. When in doubt, print it bigger. A code that is too large never causes a problem, but one that is too small quietly fails.

The 10 to 1 distance-to-size rule

The simplest guide is a ratio: a QR code should be about one tenth as wide as the distance it is read from. Divide the scan distance by ten and that is your minimum code size.

  • Read from 12 inches (a menu in hand): at least ~1.2 inches.
  • Read from 5 feet (a store window): at least ~6 inches.
  • Read from 20 feet (a poster across a room): at least ~2 feet.

It is a floor, not a target. Going bigger only makes scanning easier and faster.

Size is not the only thing that decides if it scans

Three more factors matter as much as raw size:

  • Quiet zone. Leave a clear margin of empty space around the code, about four squares wide. A code crammed to the edge of a card or crowded by text gets harder to find.
  • Data density. More data means more squares, which means a denser code that has to be printed larger to stay readable. Keeping the destination short keeps the code simpler.
  • Square, not stretched. Never squeeze a code out of its square shape to fit a layout. Scale it evenly.
